Film Friday: Catfish

I remember my workmate telling me about Catfish a few years ago, and not wanting to spoil the plot too much, she told me to give it a watch. This week we finally got round to watching it, and really enjoyed it! I don't want to give too much away to those who haven't seen it, but the documentary begins when a New York photographer called Nev gets a package from a young girl who has made some of her paintings for him. More follow and gradually he gets to know her and her family via Facebook. Nev's friends decide to document the correspondence that grows between them... but things turn out to be slightly different than first expected. The documentary explores just how much we can know about other people via the internet, and there is now an MTV series that has been made out of the premise of the film. If you've seen it let me know what you made of it!

  1. I loved Catfish - so unsettling; kind of heartbreaking; totally fascinating.

  2. Do you think the movie was an actual documentary or just scripted like one?

    1. After watching the movie i did a bit of research and found that a lot of people (including documentary film maker Morgan Spurlock!) were quite skeptical about how real the movie was. I think (hope) it was all based on reality, but i guess they may have gone back and done some extra editing shots at the end perhaps to fill it out? Hard to tell but i believed it all when watching!
