Salt 'n' Pepa Shakers!

The first album I owned was Salt 'n' Pepa's greatest hits, I used to have it on endless play on my walkman. So I really love these salt 'n' pepa shakers, available from drinkanddream on Etsy! Now what condiment could be used for Spinderella?!

Also available from the same place are these cool hand printed Ramones window blinds, first seen on Design Sponge.

Illustrator of the Week No 10: Emily Sutton

I chose this week's illustrator having seen her bird sculptures on the It's Nice That blog which is a good place for design inspirations. Emily was born in North Yorkshire and is currently in her final year at Edinburgh College of Art. She says on her website that she is inspired by "relics of a bygone era" and she "spends many an afternoon immersed in the contents of the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh." Edinburgh is one place I really want to visit, I like the every day scenes Emily captures in her sketch books.

Vintage Finds No 3: Old Autograph Book

On Sunday I went along to Leeds Vintage Fashion Fair. There were lots of pretty objects and clothes for sale. Sadly the only dress I quite fancied was £60, so a bit pricey but I did find this turn-of-the-century autograph book under some hats on one stall.

Here are a couple of pages I scanned in.. I like the effort which people put into their messages. Also liking Miss Mary Hardy's style! I wonder whose Autograph Book it originally was.. there's no name inside. A lot of it is still blank. Should I carry it on or leave it so? I guess I should leave it. Not a bad find for a fiver anyway..

Lomo Action 2

Just got my second Lomo film developed, and took some new shots this weekend as the weather was so lovely and sunny.

Some came out well but others not as well; especially disappointing was one I took of my friend cartwheeling, I took it a second too early so it didn't quite work. Oh well!

Happiness in Magazines

Hmm, does anyone get a little bored of reading the same old rubbish in (women's lifestyle) magazines? I usually buy them on train journeys or just on evenings when I need to relax, but there just doesn't seem to be any good ones out there in the UK. I get really bored of rehashed stories about Amy Winehouse or Ten Ways to Keep Your Lover Happy type articles.

There are 3 magazines I've seen produced in other countriesI'd like to get my hands on, were it not for the high price tag..

Starting with

1 Lula

This comes out twice a year so it's a hefty tenner an issue, but the Cherry Blossom Girl is a part of the team so the photos inside are beautiful! (hmm i can't tell if this is mainly produced in this country actually but its still quite pricey..)

2 Frankie

This Australian magazine looks really good. From their website, it's 'aimed at 20-something women (and men) looking for a magazine that’s as smart, funny, sarcastic, friendly, cute, rude, arty, curious and caring as they are.'

3 Bust

Bust is a great American magazine which includes interviews with interesting celebrities, musicians etc as well as some crafty articles too. I sometimes read it when at my friend's house but maybe I should subscribe myself too..

If anyone knows of any good UK magazines which don't have sky high prices let me know ;-)

Illustrator of the week No 9: Sanna Annukka

I'm not a great fan of Keane's music but their cover, designed by half English-half Finnish designer Sanna Annuka is lovely. Graduating from Brighton in 2005, Sanna specialises in screen printing. One of her collections of screen prints was spotted in a shop in London by a friend of the band and this led to her creating more artwork for Keane's Under the Iron Sea album. You can see the Finnish folk influence in her designs which are also inspired by camping trips by arctic rivers in Lapland.

What I'm listening to..

Woo somehow i've got to my 50th post, yay!

Decor8 has a "What I'm listening to" thread so I decided to post this. I am about to go to see Jeffrey Lewis play in Derby... looking forward to it! Currently listening to 'I Aint Thick It's Just a Trick 'off the Crass covers album... oh and Jeffrey also does some nice little comics as well!

Drawing Club!

Last night I went to the Drawing Club, which is held on Tuesdays at the Hand and Heart Gallery which has recently opened on Derby Road in Nottingham. The idea is you just turn up and draw pictures of each other for practise. It was a really nice and relaxing way to spend an evening, and we were lucky enough to get a free freshly baked brownie to sample as well! Hoping to go back next week!

Here are a few pictures I drew, it's really hard to draw people when they are drawing you too as they keep moving.. that's my excuse anyway..

Illustrator of the week No 8: Sara Torres

Will the rain ever stop? A month's worth of rain in one day, it's crazy!

Anyway I first spotted this week's illustrator on the Adobe site. Sara Torres lives in Madrid and her portfolio includes work for Loreal, Vodafone and Sunsilk amongst others. She has also done some fun illustrations of some my favourite bands, including (from top) Elastica, Blondie, Pixies and Pavement.

Plans & Apologies Album Cover

Well it seems like Autumn is here now September has begun, the rain won't stop!

I thought I'd post a cd cover I designed recently for some friends of mine, a band called Plans & Apologies, from Derby. Their new album is entitled the Bassett Hound & the Icy Ground and has some great pop songs on it. They wanted a Mr Benn style cover designing so here's what I ended up with. It's made from paper cutouts I drew, scanned in and put together on Photoshop. They seemed pleased with the results which is great! Top: Front of the CD, below the back and at the bottom is how it looks folded out.

(Um you'll have to click on it to enlarge it, not sure how to stretch it in Blogger without it losing resolution!)
